Mt Carr

Today we took our neighbors dogs with us to climb a peak on the Y-Alpine list.

This is the route we took today.

Directions to the trailhead: Rte 93 North or South to Exit 26. Follow Rte 25 West for 7.3 miles and take a right onto Main Street in Rumney. Main Street is located 2.0 miles past the Polar Caves (which will be on your left). After turning onto Main Street, follow the road for 7 miles to a parking lot on your left. You will pass Stinson Lake on your right, and at 6.6 miles the road will turn to dirt. The parking lot will be found .4 miles on your left from here just after a house sign marked with numbers 2976/2978.

We started out on the Three Ponds Trail.

[100k JPEG Image]

Just after leaving the parking lot you cross a bridge.

[100k JPEG Image]

We followed the trail for .5 miles to the junction of the Carr Mtn trail. Up to this point the trail is a wide fireroad. At this sign we took a left onto the Carr Mtn trail which is much narrower.

[100k JPEG Image]

Our first sign of wildlife was this snake. We saw several during the day.

[100k JPEG Image]

The trail meanders through dense forest with lots of fungus growing on stumps.

[100k JPEG Image]

There is one water crossing to deal with.

[100k JPEG Image]

More growth. The final .75 miles of the trail was very wet and muddy.

[100k JPEG Image]

3.5 miles after leaving the parking lot we reached the junction to the spur trail to the summit.

[100k JPEG Image]

On the summit we found a dozen 8th graders from a school the Indian Head school in CT. They were on a 3 day backpacking trip.

[100k JPEG Image]

Everyone got excited when this plane flew over towards the peak.

[100k JPEG Image]

The pilot circled the summit several times taking photos of us as we took photos of him.

[100k JPEG Image]

Anyone seen this plane?
