North & South Doublehead

With forecasts of afternoon thunderstorms we decided on Doublehead as today's hike. These two peaks are on the Y-Alpine list.

This is the route we took today. We did the loop clockwise.

Directions to the trailhead: From Jackson, follow route 16B to Whitney's Inn and turn right onto Dundee Road ski area. Continue past the Black Mountain ski area on your left. 1/2 mile past past the ski area on your left you will see the Doublehead Ski trail with a small parking area.

A 3-D view of our hike.

[22k JPEG Image]

The Old Path trail goes straight up to the col between the two peaks - take the ski trail to the left.

[22k JPEG Image]

The trail follows the old ski trail to the summit through both grassy and rocky areas to the juction with the New Path trail by the cabin on the summit.

[22k JPEG Image]

The cabin is available for rent.

[22k JPEG Image]

The cabin was locked but you could see inside that it had 4 bunkrooms.

[22k JPEG Image]

Out behind the cabin is a well maintained outhouse.

[22k JPEG Image]

Just past the cabin is an overlook with great views.

This spider was making one of the windows it's home.

[22k JPEG Image]

What great workmanship they had 70+ years ago.

[22k JPEG Image]

Ten minutes after leaving the cabin we came to the col.

[22k JPEG Image]

And ten minutes later we came to a great view form a ledge.

[22k JPEG Image]

We enjoyed the breeze and the fact we were off from work :>

[22k JPEG Image]

The trail is well marked - here we are at the juction of the path going down and the trail to the summit of the south peak.

[22k JPEG Image]

Hmmm - is this the summit?

[22k JPEG Image]

Or is this the summit?

A view of the north peak from the south.

A look back at the two peaks as we head back to North Conway. This is a short little hike with some great views. Good hike for the day after a longer one to stretch your legs.
