East Kennebago

We woke to rain this morning so decided to alter our plans picking a shorter hike than what we had planned last night.

This is the route we took today up to the summit of East Kennebago.

Directions to the trailhead: Follow Rte 16 north for 9.5 miles from the split with Rte 4 in Rangely. Turn left onto an unmarked logging road, cross the bridge and take a right. Follow the main road for @ 2.7 miles where you take a left. Follow this road as high as you wish to drive.

Time to summit: 1:00

This is the profile of the hike to the summit from our GPS.

A 3-D view of our hike.

This is as far as we drove up the road. Although we have 4 wheel drive, we haven't experimented with tougher terrain and didn't want to start here, miles from the nearest help. Pretty sure we could have gone through this washout and driven all the way to the boundry marker.

Geri and Julie ready to go - no rain in sight.

[22k JPEG Image]

We headed up the road which became narrower the further we went.

[22k JPEG Image]

Fifteen minutes or so brought us to the yellow boundry markers. Our goal was to follow the yellow marked boundry line to the height of land and then bushwack to the summit. This is a view of the trail to the left of the road.

[22k JPEG Image]

To the right of the road is a 4 foot high yellow stake.

[22k JPEG Image]

The boundry line is well marked and easy to follow. The trail is @ 3 feet wide.

[22k JPEG Image]
In some areas it goes through more open woods. When we reached the height of land we headed towards the summit at 322 degrees, but after 15 minutes found a herd path with very recent animal traffic that took us right to the cannister.

Julie is watching Geri sign the register. Julie was here this past summer and jumped at the chance to do another bushwack. This was our 89th peak on the NEHH list. Julie is holding at 97 waiting for a weekend with good weather to finish her last three peaks in Baxter State Park.

Since it only took us an hour to reach the summit we decided we needed some more exercise and headed to Bald mountain on the way back to the camper.

Geri enjoying the view at a scenic outcrop two thirds of the way to the top.

Although a cloudy day the sun kept streaking through the clouds.

Another shot of the same view.

[22k JPEG Image]

Geri and Julie enjoying the view and thinking about the Salmon we will be coooking for dinner with Geri's special recipe.

[22k JPEG Image]

The rays of sun turned the cloudy day into a very pretty one.

Geri and Julie getting ready to descend back to the car.

At the bottom of the trail Julie spies a rock foundation - a well? Anybody think it looks like the one in the movie "The Ring"? .

Thoughts of a fellow hiker.
