Thanksgiving 2008 - We awake to cloudy skies with the temp around 30 degrees. We know that we are going hiking, but not sure where. After breakfast we head south on Rte 302 through Crawford Notch trying to decide where to hike.
Eventually we decided on Mt Crawford, a peak that have great 360 degree views but is not a 4K. Although we have hiked this peak several times, it has been a few years. Pulling into the parking lot we find that we are the only ones there.
The hike starts by crossing a bridge, then meanders through the woods crossing to small streams. From here it heads up at a steady pitch until you come out to the first set of open ledges with wonderful views looking West.
We were the first to leave our foot prints on the fresh snow which alternated between hard packed and mashed potaoe consistancy. Enjoying the views along the way we reached the summit in 2:30 seeing only animal tracks. After some lunch we headed down and came across a couple on there way up. After wishing each other Happy Thanksgivings we completed our descent and headed back to the campground where we were meeting HikerBob for a Thanksgiving Feast at the Highland Center.
Directions to the trailhead: The trail start on Route 302 at a parking area on the West side of the Saco River near the Notchland Inn, @ 5.6 miles south of the Wiley House in Crawford Notch.
Time to Summit: 2:30 hours
