With winds on Mt Washington being forecasted to be in the 90's we decided to hike Mt Garfield instead. We arrived at the trailhead @ 8:00 AM and found Steve, Earl, Tom, and Atticus.

After donning our skis we were off. In the Winter the actual trailhead is reached by following the gated fire road 1.5 miles. With only a slight uphill grade we covered the milage quickly and reached the start of the trail where Tom put booties on Atticus to protect his feet. This was the first time we had met these 2, and are very happy we did.

Geri and I switched back to our hiking boots and we were off. The Garfield trail is 4.8 miles long with a gradual grade that we covered at a comfortable pace. We had 3 stream crossings to deal with, but we were all able to rock hop across them staying dry. We all bare booted the trail which had good footing up to teh spur trail to the summit. Here the trail gets steep and had poor footing with glare ice under a few inches of snow.

At the summit we moved around to the East side of the peak in the protection of the old fire tower foundation, out of the wind, and under a bright blue sky where we enjoyed snacks before heading back to the cars.

Directions to the trailhead: Rte 93 north to Exit 35. Follow Route 3 east 4.9 miles. Turn into the parking area on the right just before the bridge over the Gale River.
