Webster via Webster Cliff trail

August 10, 2008

Today we decided to hike to the summit of Mt Webster via the Webster Cliff trail, a trail we have not been on in many years. The forecast called for a chance of afternoon showers, but we had sunshine coming and going at the start.

The trail leaves Rte 302 about 1 mile south of the Wiley House. It starts out flat for the first one tenth of a mile where it crosses the Saco river. From here the trail climbs steeply until it reaches the first open ledge at @ 1.8 miles.

As the trail climbs towards the summit you are brought out onto ledge overlooking Crawford Notch several times with great views. Looking down you see many slides that fade away toward Rte 302.

As we reached the summit we see dark clouds approaching from the south and decide that rather than descending the way we came we would head down the Jackson Webster trail to the Highland Center.

We stopped at the Silver Cascade where there is a large swimming hole - not today however as the temps have cooled with light showers. We ran into a a few people along our descent and stopped to chat.

Reaching Rte 302 we start the 3.5 mile walk back to our car. One passing shower that had us ducking in the woods for cover, but soon we were at the Wiley House ordering a couple of large ice cream cones.

Length of Hike: 5 hours
