Mt Nancy
With forecasted temps at home of 99 degrees we thought joining VFTT members Rick and Janice on a hike to Mt Nancy would be a good way to keep cool as it passes a cascade fall with a pool, and two large ponds.
|
This is the route we took today.
Directions to the trailhead: From Barlett at the intersection of Bear Notch Road and Rte 302 head north towards Twin Montain. The trail head is on the left 2.8 north of the Sayer Rock picnic area.
Follow the Nancy Pond trail past Nancy and Norcross ponds. As you come to the end of Norcross pond you will see a clearing with a small "no camping" sign. The trial to the summit of Nancy begins just behind you on the right. Almost immeadiately you come to a fork - take the left fork and follow it to the slide area. Just before the slide the trail continues up on your right. Follow this to the summit. This is very step in sections, but there is good footing and many trees to assist you. This use to be a bushwack but is now an un-officially maintained trail. We only encountered one blowdown that we had to crawl under.
Time to summit: @ 5 hours

Thre are several water crossings to deal with - luckily towday they were all easy to cross.
|
2.4 miles from the start you reach the Nancy Cascade - a large waterfall with pool at the bottom. It's a great spot to cool down on a hot day like today.

We enjoyed a snack on the edge of Nancy Pond. the pond is 4 acres in area and today had a nice breeze coming across it.
|
An hour later we stood at the summit. The heard path to the summit is now more a un-officially maintained trail in very good condition and very easy to follow.

Back from the summit we stopped at the end of Norcross pond to fill up our water bottles.
